Young Dad, 28, Passes Away Suddenly; Doctors Discover 72 Lung Lesions

Young Dad Dies Suddenly After Rare Lung Infection

A 28-year-old man from New South Wales, Dylan Watts, tragically passed away just days before his 29th birthday. A rare and devastating bacterial infection had left his lungs riddled with holes, ultimately claiming his life on March 22.

Family Shocked Despite Declining Health

Dylan, from Broulee, south of Bateman’s Bay, had been battling severe health issues for years. His family described his death as a heartbreaking shock, even though they knew his condition was worsening.

Doctors had warned Dylan that he was unlikely to live past 30 due to the severity of the infection. By mid-2024, the infection had created 72 holes in his lungs. He became dependent on heavy medication and frequent hospital care.

Rapid Decline Over the Years

Dylan’s younger sister, Caitlyn, shared with Daily Mail Australia how quickly the illness progressed. “I found out last July just how bad things had gotten,” she said. “He had already spent three weeks in the hospital after coughing up blood. The doctor said if he hadn’t gone in when he did, he wouldn’t have made it.”

Back in 2021, doctors had identified only two holes in his lungs. Over the next three years, Dylan’s health steadily declined. He battled fatigue, persistent coughs, reflux issues, and mental health struggles. Over-the-counter treatments failed, and he eventually required specialist care.

Earlier this year, Dylan spent another three weeks in the hospital after a lung hemorrhage. From that point, the holes in his lungs multiplied rapidly. His sister described the medications he needed as enough to “fill an entire backpack.”

A Fighting Spirit

Despite his condition, Dylan remained determined and hopeful. Caitlyn recalled, “He was very sick but still fighting. He really believed he could recover somehow.”

Two weeks before his death, his mother Suzanne brought him home, along with his beloved puppy, Polar. She began making plans for his long-term care. Tragically, only five days later, Dylan passed away.

Remembering Dylan

Caitlyn described her brother as curious and fiercely protective of his loved ones. “He always stood up for people who didn’t have a voice,” she said. “He was my big brother, and I always looked up to him. He guided me, even if it meant pulling me back when I was making mistakes.”

The siblings shared a bond over music and tattoos. Dylan had even started learning tattooing and planned to ink both his mom and sister before his health declined.

Community Support

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to cover funeral expenses. So far, it has raised over $3,300 of the $6,000 goal.

On the fundraiser page, Caitlyn urged others to cherish their loved ones. “This shows how fragile life is. Hold your family close and tell them you love them.”

Family friend Cheyenne O’Brien added, “Even though we knew he was unwell, it’s still such a shock. His family now faces both their loss and the stress of planning his farewell.”
