People with the lowest incomes are disproportionately affected by facial disfigurements because there is a lack of therapy accessible in rural regions, the expense of receiving treatment is high, and there is a lack of understanding about the treatment options that are available. The circumstances of our patients are often made worse by starvation and poor hygiene, and they are fully aware of the social exclusion, isolation, and prejudice that they themselves have experienced. In a nation that places a high value on community, being ostracized for the way you appear is very damaging to the kind of life you lead.
